You check where the exits are before you've even sat down. You take the stairs — always.
When someone mentions an MRI scan, a lift, a packed train or a middle seat on a plane, something in your chest tightens before you've had a single conscious thought. That's claustrophobia — and it isn't a weakness or a quirk. It's a subconscious alarm that fires automatically around enclosed spaces. I'm Darren Carter, an Advanced Clinical Hypnotherapist, and I help people switch that alarm off — calmly, safely, and usually within a few sessions.
Got an MRI, flight, or medical procedure coming up? Tell me the date — I'll be honest about what's achievable before then.

Claustrophobia shapes lives in ways other people rarely see. These are the things clients tell me:
Here's what most people with claustrophobia have already discovered: knowing the lift is safe doesn't help. Statistics don't help. Deep breaths help a little, until they don't.
That's because claustrophobia doesn't live in the logical mind. It's a protection pattern held in the subconscious — often learned in a single moment years ago, sometimes one you don't even remember — and it fires before conscious thought gets a look-in. The panic isn't a decision. It's an automatic response to a space your deeper mind has labelled dangerous.
Hypnotherapy works because it speaks to the part of the mind actually running the pattern. In a calm, relaxed hypnotic state, we teach the subconscious what the logical mind already knows: the space is not the threat. The alarm can stand down. And once it does, the change holds — because you haven't learned to cope with the fear, you've removed the reason for it.
Facing an MRI scan? This is one of the most common reasons people contact me about claustrophobia — sometimes with only weeks to go. Tell me your scan date when you get in touch. Depending on timing, sessions can usually be arranged quickly, and even a short, focused programme can be the difference between cancelling the scan and getting through it calmly. Some clients also arrange a session shortly before the scan itself to lock the calm response in place.
Ready to stop planning your life around small spaces?
Get Help NowYour first session is 90 minutes: a relaxed consultation to understand exactly how your claustrophobia behaves — where it started, what triggers it, how strongly it fires — a plain-English explanation of hypnosis, and your first experience of the hypnotic state. Follow-up sessions are built around 60 minutes of hypnosis.
Start with a free, no-pressure phone conversation — or book a session directly if you'd prefer. If there's a scan or flight coming up, tell me the date.
Your 90-minute consultation maps out where the claustrophobia started, what triggers it and how strongly it fires — then you experience hypnosis for the first time.
Most claustrophobia work resolves in three to four sessions — with Client Support Guides between sessions to keep the change moving.
Everything is confirmed by email and there's nothing to prepare. You can choose in-person in Wokingham or online from home.
We talk through how the claustrophobia started and what you'd like to feel instead. No script, no judgement, no pressure.
This is not exposure therapy. I will never shut you in anything, surprise you, or push you to face a confined space before you're ready. All the work happens in deep relaxation, using your imagination at your pace.
Hypnosis is not a trapped feeling. You remain aware and in control throughout, you can open your eyes and speak at any time — many clients describe it as the most relaxed they've felt in years.
Claustrophobia responds especially well to online sessions — you work from your own space, somewhere you already feel safe, over Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp Video.
If you'd rather come in person, my practice is at Markham House, 20 Broad Street, Wokingham, Berkshire — a comfortable, ground-level consulting room, for what it's worth.
I've helped more than 3,790 clients over ten-plus years, including many with claustrophobia and related fears, with 134 five-star Google reviews. I'm registered with the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR) and the National Hypnotherapy Society — a UK Accredited Register recognised by the Professional Standards Authority — with CPD training in dental phobias and medical anxiety, which sits directly alongside this work.
If claustrophobia is one of several fears, or part of a wider pattern, the fears & phobias page explains how the same approach applies across all of them.

Claustrophobia is rarely really about the space itself. It is about the sudden internal feeling of being trapped, unable to escape, or not in control of what happens next.
That is why someone can know logically that a lift is safe or that an MRI scanner is routine, yet still feel panic start in their chest before they have properly thought about it. The alarm is automatic.
The good news is that this pattern can be changed. We are not trying to argue with the fear. We are helping the deeper mind stop labelling enclosed spaces as dangerous in the first place. If enclosed spaces are part of a broader fear pattern, the fears and phobias page explains the wider approach too.
MRI fear is one of the most time-sensitive reasons people contact me, often with only a short gap before the appointment. If that is you, tell me the date straight away.
We do not start by overwhelming you with scanner videos or forcing you to imagine the worst. We begin in a calm, deeply relaxed state and work at a pace your mind can actually absorb.
The aim is to help the scanner feel predictable, manageable, and no longer like an immediate threat — so you are not just gritting your teeth, you are changing the response itself. For some people the fear is also tangled up with medical anxiety and catastrophic thinking about scans, not just the space itself.
Hypnotherapy for phobias works below the level of logic, where the fear response is actually being triggered. It is not about forcing exposure or making you push through panic.
That is why the work can feel surprisingly gentle while still being very effective.
Your Client Support Guides give you practical tools between sessions, especially if you have a scan, flight, or other enclosed-space situation coming up. Included with package options.
I am registered with recognised professional bodies including the General Hypnotherapy Register and the National Hypnotherapy Society, and I hold full Professional Indemnity cover.
I am also CPD-trained in dental phobias and medical anxiety, which is directly relevant to claustrophobia cases involving MRI scans, medical procedures, and the trapped feeling these situations can trigger.
This means the work is warm and human, but also properly grounded in professional standards and relevant specialist experience.
Medical and confined-space phobias are some of the cases I find most rewarding to help with, because the relief can be so immediate and life-changing.
People often come to me feeling embarrassed by how strong the fear has become, especially when an MRI, flight, or hospital procedure is involved. There is no judgement here — just a calm way through. If your claustrophobia sits alongside wider overwhelm or panic sensitivity, you may also find the wellbeing hypnotherapy page helpful.
